The wife's 67 shovel is not charging. Pretty well narrowed it down to the alternator not charging. Its a conversion from a gen. Anyway, does anyone know anything about these?? There is no writing on it anywhere. Picture is attached.

Also, on the regulater, there are three wires in a row coming out of it. I had it where the two outside wires went to the alternator and the middle wire went to the battery, does that sound right??? There is no indicators on the regulater to say where they go. It seemed to work ok.

As you can probably tell, electricity is a VERY weak point for me.. Thanks for any help!!

Robin

Robin,

I have heard that these Alternator Conversions are good to go with one exception....they either work or they don't.

Really the only way to check the alternator is to take it to your local parts dealer and see if you can rig something up on there testing machine.  If it is good no worries, if it is bad it will need to be replaced and they are $pendy little buggers.  An alternative option is to put the solid state generator on.  They are a few bucks cheaper and I haven't had any problems out of mine.  The generator portion is rebuild-able but again the solid state regulator on the end is a works/doesn't work deal, but it is a nice neat package.

As for the regulator......it depends on the breed.  If it is a Boch your correct.  BUT the advantage of switching to the alternator is that you can put the "magic box" on.  Two wires to the Alternator and one to the battery.  Again if the box goes there isn't really any way to test it other than to swap it out and see if a new one cures the ailment.

I know this doesn't help much but it is about the best I can do and it is what I would do if it was here in the shop.
