Ok, so there isn't much history so I guess it is a little history about me and a lot about how I view the custom motorcycle world.
I am a fifth-generation, born and raised Wyomingite. I started riding Harley Davidson Motorcycles when I was 17. I am currently in the "twilight" of a 20-year career in the Marines and intend to open my own bike shop. My family has ranched in Wyoming for the better part of 100 years, and I feel it is appropriate to stay with a From horses, To horsepower theme. After all. . .that is what I did.
The Broken Diamond is a registered brand of my family in the state of Wyoming, and is used primarily with our Registered Morgan Horses. So if you know about Morgan Horses you know why I like Harley-Davidsons'—both are true blue American made.
I have a strong personal philosophy about Custom Motorcycles and that philosophy will be carried into my shop and parts line. I believe custom motorcycles and custom parts should be just that, CUSTOM. Meaning they are one-of-a-kind, never to be mass-produced, repeated, or extensively modified original parts. Granted, there are some killer-looking custom bikes out there that are from kits, over the counter parts, and some great imaginations. However, when I look at some of these bikes, I don't see one hand-built, distinctive, original part on them. To me that bike is a wonderful combination of custom stuff, and that makes it unique, but it isn't truly Custom. Of course, this leads to a huge problem in the business of custom bikes. Cost. It takes time to build something from scratch, and more often than not, it has to be done a couple of times to be just right. So, unfortunately, my bikes and parts line will not be inexpensive. This leads to second half of my philosophy…
Custom Bikes don't have to be excessively expensive. Yeah, I know. . .doesn't make sense does it. I believe in "sweat equity" and I will set my shop up accordingly. One of the most frustrating things for me is to see a rider who either lacks the ability or the facility, but has the desire, to work on his/her own bike and gets gouged by mechanics. Granted, some things are best left to someone who really knows what they are doing. But paying a couple of hundred dollars for an oil change isn't one of them. I don't know everything about motorcycles, but I do know some things and I believe in the saying "Teach them how to fish and they will never go hungry".
Finally, I believe in Harley Davidson Motorcycles. These machines are magical. I prefer to take a Harley and customize it, rather than order a bunch of clone parts from other manufacturers. This creates some limiting factors for me. If you want a 145 Cubic Inch motor with a six-speed transmission and a 300-rear tire and you want me to build it…we are going to have a talk. I am not saying I won't build it for you, but I will be very particular about what we use. Personally, I like to build a cool looking, strong, long-life, Harley. Usually, I start with a complete machine and tear it down to the frame and go from there. I personally touch every nut, bolt, spacer, and shim on the machine. Depending upon what you want, I may send the motor to someone else, but that is about it. I, personally, like spokes, long front ends, and ridability. I like all Harleys from Flatties to Fatties. And I love the look in people's eyes when they see what I have created for them for the first time.
